Red Bull Was the Best Marketer of 2012

Red Bull was the best marketer of 2012 in the inaugural and wholly unofficial Rated JPG marketer of the year awards.  In 2012 Red Bull pushed the limits of human capability. They also showed us how incredibly powerful video has become in a social context. The Statos and Kluge projects were the perfect storm of brand, creative, social and production power. Red Bull Stratos may be the most ambitious and awe inspiring marketing campaigns of all time. Felix

What are the Funniest Insurance Commercials?

Over the years car insurance companies have used more and more humor to win the hearts and minds of consumers. They’ve gone from one off spots like Joe Torre sucking down some wheat grass to fully fledged integrated campaigns. The last few years have seen ad spend from insurance agencies increase at a good pace since the heart of the recession, including a 54% increase from Allstate from ‘09-’10. We’ve also seen insurance agencies ramp

JCPenney Ellen Commercials Tanked the Company

Ron Johnson said it best himself “Our marketing isn’t doing the work. It needs to communicate pricing strategy…We’ve got to get our pricing across.” With big box retail the target market is much broader than most niche shops. They carry more brands, more styles, and a wider variety of items. While social is certainly integral to any marketing mix now, television is still vital for retailers. Johnson didn’t single out any particular medium when he

GoDaddy’s Dirty Sexist Ads Worked. Are They Going to Stop?

With the news that Go Daddy has hired Duetsch for their Olympic campaign I wonder what their next campaign will be after nearly 5 years of using essentially the same material. Sometimes it’s ok to fly in the face of convention. When horrible ideas actually turn out to work in favor of the original goals. The Go Daddy campaigns have been described by Chairman and Founder Bob Parsons as “fun, edgy, and a bit inappropriate.”

Will Someone Please Disrupt the Television Industry

When Netflix had their big PR snafu and I thought the online streaming/DVD service might be cooked. I among others believed that a better, more advantageous competitor could come and steal their lunch money.  And then something unexpected happened…Netflix reneged  everything and went back to the way it was for the most part.  Not only was there no competitor waiting in the wings (Hulu had already been around) people clamored for the reuniting of Netflix.  Maybe we’re

Is Kim Kardashian A “Real” Business Woman?

As I was driving to Einstein Bagels to pick up a delicious locks on bagel sandwich I turned the radio on.  “In Paris” by Jay-Z and Kanye West was ending leading to a bump before the commercial break.  That’s when the host dropped this on me.  Kim Kardashian is going to be paid $600,000 to host  New Year’s at club TAO in Las Vegas. Are you kidding me?!  That’s more than six of the top

How Video Can Make Your Social Media Campaign Shine

Irish agency Simply Zesty posted a list of “9 Impressive Social Media Campaigns Using Video” recently. They all are certainly impressive as they go well beyond just sending out a tweet or posting an article on Facebook. That being said there was a pair of videos from that list that really stuck out to me. LIVE INTERACTIVE MURALS The Canadian tourist board wanted to use social media to promote Canada as a holiday destination for

adiZero Rose 2 Campaign Lets You Run With A Bull

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYCb2ZcGnIA&list=UUcy4lbyENmPFHMCUTFtJr8Q&feature=plcp]Typically, I tune out celebrity athlete endorsements. In advertising they’re a dime a dozen. You’ve got Troy Aikman and Hulk Hogan telling me to rent TV’s for the “Big Game.” There’s Steve Young and seemingly half the ESPN Sunday football crew trying to get me to go Van Heusen. Dick’s has a ‘who’s hot in their sport this millisecond’ campaign, which is actually pretty entertaining. What none of them do is go beyond the thirty

Sony’s “Michael” Video More Popular Than iPhone 4S

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdWkKKSckNk]Sony’s Long Live Play marketing campaign and the viral short “Michael” by agency Deutsch tells a story about what would happen if some of their biggest fictional characters all came together for a drink, earning them top honors in this week’s Viral Video Chart on Adage. It edged out the iPhone 4S viral video by three million views. The video starts out with what looks like a World War Two soldier dropping down from a

Dr. Pepper 10 is Almost Everything Miller Light “Man Up” is Not

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTs-BmLOGWQ]In my last post I ranted about how horribly dumb and sexist the Miller Light “Man Up” ads were.  This time around I’m going to praise Dr. Pepper for their clever and not nearly as sexist “It’s not for women” advertising campaign. There is certainly no problem with marketing a product to a particular gender, be it men or women.  We often don’t have a problem with it because either both the product and how
